THE  STATE  HOSPITAL  - 1966

Cast plaster-fiberglass figures, hospital beds , bedpan, hospital table , goldfish bowls , live goldfish , ligthed  neon  tubing , steel hardware, wood, paint.

Is the only Concept Tableau worked through to completion. It exists in three parts, the title plaque and description “The drawing” and finaly the actual sculpture. It is patterned after a mental institution where Kienholz worked in 1948. Horrified by sadistic guards, indifferent doctors and the typically inhuman treatment of paitients, Kienholz (in retrospect) built his hospital as an angry indictmeent of all such places.
